Covid-19 has accelerated breathwork wellness trend!
With respiratory health becoming top of mind for consumers during the pandemic, breath training is set to flourish as a popular practice to fortify mental and physical wellbeing in the future.
Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art by American journalist James Nestor and Exhale by British breath coach Richie Bostock, published in May and September 2020 respectively, explore how the majority of today’s consumers have lost the ability to breathe correctly.
In September 2020, School Breathe opened the way in a new experimentation in the UK, where children practise different breathing exercises for concentration, creating a calm state of mind, and the holistic improvement of wellbeing. The programme has been piloted virtually in three London schools, with plans to expand later this year.
As nearly half (45%) of Americans report negative mental health caused by Covid-induced worry (Kaiser, 2020), breathwork offers a much-needed – and accessible – wellbeing solution for stressed-out consumers.
Some cities offer new public wellbeing installations such as in downtown Brooklyn where passer-by are guided in a collective breathing exercise through light fixtures. From March until May 11, 2021, onlookers could stand in the center of the Breathing Pavilion, by artist Ekene Ijeoma, where they might find a moment of peace and guided meditation alongside the glowing columns.
Harness the power of your breathing system for better health & wellbeing.
Inhale, exhale, find your inner balance, be connected with your inner self.
INSIGHT
“The quality of our breath is what connects us to our lives,” says Pink. “When my breathing is deeper, I feel more connected in the present, calmer, and life feels more meaningful and purposeful.”
Breathwork, scientifically proven to have profound effects on our mental and physical health, has gone mainstream during the COVID era.
It entered the realm of pop culture. Breath artist, Sage Rader, brings modern breathwork to the masses with a rock-star delivery, alchemizing science and spirituality into entertainment, while Jasmine Marie’s Black Girls Breathing delivers meditational breathwork as mental healthcare for Black women.
Cool, clubby breathwork parties and festivals are rising, such as Donovan McGrath’s (creator of Amplified Yoga, one of L.A.’s hottest live music-driven fitness classes) plans to introduce Amplified Ecstatic Breath, a breathwork social hour (complete with mood-shifting lights and a live DJ) as soon as people can meet again.
Hospitality is taking a much bigger breath, with more and more diverse breathwork programming everywhere from Six Senses’ global resorts to Chablé Yucatan and Chablé Maroma in Mexico.
Spas offer new touchless experience such as Nuvola, using the therapeutic power of dry floatation, or breathe salt caves offering to clean your lungs of city air pollutants and toxins for absorbing oxygen more efficiently, increasing red blood cell production, and even producing more dopamine – the "happy" hormone.
Breathwork apps and handheld devices that track air quality and fitness/health wearables are gaining traction. They incorporate breathing-related metrics like breathing rate, pulse oximetry, heart-rate variability and habitual breathing patterns.
Breath-tech is booming, such as Israel-based start-up Anicca sets to launch its Companion device, which regulates the wearer’s emotions by amplifying the sensation of their breathing as a calming vibration on their body or Bulo, a personalized breathing assistant that helps user to measure and optimize their airflow.
